The Sustainable Educator: Motivation or momentum?

From small successes comes great momentum

So often momentum and motivation get used interchangeably. I don’t think that works very well.

My academic writing coach taught me to see that

small successes → motivation → momentum

Notice: Motivation comes from small successes, and momentum arises from the way the two of those work together.

Motivation doesn’t come from toxic self-talk.

Motivation doesn’t come from an unclear sense of purpose.

Motivation doesn’t come from fulfilling other people’s ideas of what we need.

Motivation comes from very small and regular successes, and those successes fuel our next successes. Before we know it we have both small successes and motivation rolling! That’s momentum, and momentum is indeed elusive because most of us never break our steps down small enough.

At Define Your Lines, purpose and boundaries are pillars in our sustainable writing practice, but the really enjoyable part is when we start to feel momentum!

And, I’ll say it again, momentum comes from very small successes piled high on top of one another day after day after week after month after year.

Let’s say you’re clear on your purpose and a Zen master of boundaries…

My next challenge to you is this: How small are your successes? Small successes are the engine of sustainable writing.
